I just finished a bookcase project I've been working on for a while. I used scrap wood either that I found at the curb, or salvaged from shipping pallets. The inside shelves were made from dismantled IKEA shelf wood.
To join the planks together to make the sides I used some mortises and tenons.
Then glued and clamped them (got to use my pipe clamps for the first time, they work really well).
To join the three sides I used a locked mitre joint, however, the mismatched wood of varying thickness and a makeshift router table resulted in it not being as accurate as it needed to be. With some chisel work it managed to fit together and glue up solid, but it's not the nicest.
